Seasons Around the World
##Objective:
- Educate Youth Members on how seasons differ between the northern and southern hemispheres.
- Highlight the concept of reversed seasons and its impact on daily life.
Materials Needed:
- Globe or world map.
- Lantern / Light Globe. A torch may be ok if it is large, but a lantern or other omni-directional light is better.
- Pictures representing different seasons.
- A calendar.
- Art supplies (paper, crayons, markers).
Instructions:
Seasonal Demonstration (10 minutes):
- Use the globe and a lantern to demonstrate how the tilt of the Earth’s axis causes seasons.
- Show how when it’s summer in Australia, it’s winter in the northern hemisphere, and vice versa.
Season Matching Game (15 minutes):
- Provide pictures of various seasonal activities or landscapes.
- Have Youth members match the pictures to the correct season in both hemispheres.
Creative Expression (20 minutes):
- Ask youth members to draw or craft a scene depicting what a Scout or Guide in another country might be experiencing seasonally during JOTA/JOTI.
- For example, if JOTA/JOTI occurs in October, Scouts or Guides in Canada might be in autumn, while those in Australia are in spring.
Show and Tell (10 minutes):
- Have each youth member present their artwork and explain the seasonal differences.
Learning Outcomes:
- Understanding of Earth’s tilt and its effect on seasons.
- Awareness of cultural and environmental differences due to seasons.
- Enhanced empathy and global thinking.
